Matthew has worked as a biologist and wildlife ecologist for nearly 15 years, since graduating from the University of Liverpool, UK, in 2006 (B.Sc. Zoology) and 2007 (M.Sc. Restoration Ecology). A year between 2008 and 2009, was spent conducting entomology research and leading a research expedition in the Amazon region of Ecuador, before he moved to Canada to focus on avian ecology. Coordinating operations at several Ontario bird observatories for half a decade, in addition to working on waterfowl, shorebird, sandhill crane and species-at-risk wood-warbler monitoring projects, he brings knowledge and experience in field ornithology, and bird ecology and biology.
Matthew is also experienced in the identification and ecology of Ontario’s reptiles, amphibians, bats, butterflies and, increasingly, wildlife tracking. Matthew joined Dougan & Associates in April 2022, bringing half a decade of experience conducting bird surveys in Ontario’s consulting industry, in addition to understanding of Species at Risk legislation, monitoring, mitigation, wildlife habitat requirements and EIS preparation. He is also passionate about outdoor education, science communication and sustainable agriculture.
