Landscape Architecture & Ecological Restoration
Landscape architecture encompasses planning and design of the physical environment. At Dougan & Associates, our primary focus is ecological restoration, which is design that responds to and enhances a site’s ecology. As the most populated region in Canada, the health of Southern Ontario’s ecological systems has many threats, including habitat loss, invasive species, loss of biodiversity, and lack of natural corridors. Our designers have developed the tools and techniques to rehabilitate, restore and enhance the ecological features and functions of the sites we work on from the site- to the landscape-scale.
Our design work focuses on green infrastructure, ecological restoration of disturbed sites, habitat enhancement, trails, the naturalization of public parks and schools, and an expertise in mini forests through our Network of Nature initiative.
D&A Approach
No matter the scale of the project, our approach to design is to use scientific knowledge of a site’s pre-disturbance condition and ecological systems to re-establish ecological integrity to a site. Our Landscape Architects are typically involved in projects from the characterization and environmental impact assessment stages onwards. This in-depth knowledge of each site’s unique ecological features facilitates the development of an appropriate and site-specific design response for each project, and allows for effective implementation of recommendations.
Our work encompasses the full range of tasks through the project life cycle from environmental impact assessment through to detailed design, construction, contract administration, and post-construction monitoring.
D&A Expertise
Dougan & Associates offers a unique set of design talents with education and experience that is grounded in a firm ecological base. Together, our team of Landscape Architects has over 30 years of experience in the application of ecological landscape design. In addition to being full members of the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects, other qualifications include Ecological Land Classification (ELC), Ontario Wetland Evaluation System (OWES), and International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) certification.
Our team is proficient with the full suite of landscape design tools including AutoCAD, ArcGIS, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.
