O’Connor Park Wetland Design and Monitoring
Mississauga, ON
Project Overview
O’Connor Park is a unique project which showcases balancing recreation and conservation objectives. Numerous environmental studies and a restoration planting plan were included due to the presence of existing wetland features on the site and discovery of a population of Painted Turtles and nesting Virginia Rails during the pre-development field work.
Dougan Ecology performed both wildlife and vegetation studies, which informed the subsequent restoration and enhancement design. The completed park now includes active recreation areas for the surrounding community - including sports fields, walking trails, and playgrounds - as well as a naturalized restoration area with wetland and upland habitats. The existing wetland biodiversity was preserved through wetland seedbank salvage and diversified through extensive planting to enhance the site’s biodiversity.
The site contained a population of Painted Turtles prior to the park’s construction, which were the subject of a complex protection and relocation campaign undertaken by Dougan Ecology in association with Credit Valley Conservation.
In 2024, Dougan Ecology returned to conduct a monitoring program for the naturalization areas on this site to assess the performance of the restoration. We looked at wetland water levels and water temperature, basking turtle activity, and breeding bird activity with a focus on marsh breeding species.

Project Highlights
Monitoring in 2024 revealed a healthy population of Painted Turtles and various wetland bird species including Virgina Rail and Sora making use of the wetland during breeding and migration seasons. The restored wetland and interpretive signage will provide a long-term educational opportunity for the neighbourhood, learning about and fostering a deep understanding of natural habitats and wildlife.
